c/o Malaysia Consulate General of Hong Kong

His Excellency Y.A.B. DATO’ SERI ABDULLAH BIN HAJI AHMAD BADAWI

Prime Minister, Minister of Finance & Minister of Internal Security

Pejabat Perdana Menteri,

Bangunan Perdana Putra,

Pentadbiran Kerajaan Persekutuan,

62502 PUTRAJAYA.

His Excellency Y.A.B. DATO’ SERI ABDULLAH BIN HAJI AHMAD BADAWI:

We’d like to bring to your attention a recent halt order by the Minister of Internal Security (MOIS) on the distribution of The Epoch Times in Malaysia. We deeply regret and strongly oppose to the action taken by your government. We ask that the MOIS revoke the order.

The Epoch Times is an independent printing press, providing fair reporting, wide coverage, and insightful analyses on China affairs. The Paper was created merely a few years ago targeting overseas Chinese communities. The Paper has since rapidly grown to be a global entity with worldwide distribution in more than 30 countries in 8 different languages.

Printed copies of the Paper are imported into Malaysia each week for distribution to approximately 8500 readers. The Paper serves as an important voice in the society. It is not just an information provider, more significantly, it is a symbol of press freedom and the rule of law. The Epoch Times is not afraid of issuing truthful reports and coverage which may not seem popular to some.

We extensively cover human rights situations, democratic movements, and dissident groups such as underground churches and Falun Gong spiritual practice. As you may be well aware, many media won’t be willing to cover these stories.

We are disappointed by your government’s action to halt the distribution under the pressure from China, in fear that the newspaper “may result in a negative impression on the ruling government of China.” Through the action, the Malaysia Interior Ministry has willingly become an accomplice in the CCP’s harassment of and interference with the Epoch Times.

Malaysian Government and Malaysians should not forget, it was because of the support from CCP that enabled the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) to conduct lasting revolution that relied on violence, which intensified the cultural conflict within the Malaysian society, resulted in numerous chaotic and bloody incidences. The radio which was responsible for the rebellic propaganda that sovietised Malaysia was based in Hunan Province of China.

The ex-secretary-general of the outlawed (CPM) Chin Peng now regretted the killings, still, he was refused by the Malaysian Government to return to Malaysia recently. Deputy Internal Security Minister Noh Omar stressed the government barred Chin Peng from returning in 2003 on grounds he was still linked to a banned organisation with a “history of perpetrating terrorism” in the country.

Also, we have two reasons to show you that there is no need to fear the ruling party of China —the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). First, communism is dying out worldwide. This is a simple fact. CCP knows its fate, and has become extremely insecure. The Chinese economy has become their tool to solicit support from other nations.

The publication of the “Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party” by the Epoch Times last year has resulted in over 350 millions party members’ withdrawal from the CCP . Sided with the CCP is standing on the wrong side of history, this should no be the choice of the Malaysian government and Malaysian.

Second, as the Epoch Times is printed and circulated in Hong Kong where civil liberty and the rule of law have prevailed despite many hiccups from time to time. Respect for human rights and rule of law is exactly what makes foreign investors pour their investments into Hong Kong.

The halt order on the distribution of the Epoch Times in Malaysia has infringed the right of Epoch Times as a media, which involves the right to information of thousands and millions of Chinese and Malaysian. Malaysia is the only democratic country that violates freedom of speech and press freedom in such a manner.

We strongly believe that the continued, uncensored distribution of our Paper world wide including Malaysia is vital in sustaining basic human rights and preserving the core moral values shared by the world, and would help your government demonstrate that your commitment to press freedom as well as people’s right to information.

Please withdraw the halt order.

Yours truly,

The Epoch Times, Hong Kong
