   假使热铁轮,于汝顶上旋;

Bodhi Heart

If a hot iron wheel is wheeling above your head,

Your bodhi heart is lost for fear of its bitterness.

                 —Buddhist Scriptures

Like Sakyamuni, you are sitting straight

In business center, under bodhi tree

A bodhi heart is bright and dangling

In your heart …

(Bodhi is not a tree

But your bodhi heart is a heart

But it is knowable and untouchable

Clear, free from dust, no need to clean it)

The faquir draws a wall on the ground

You sit in it, like Tripitaka, but bodyless *

Eight bitternesses outside, peeking over the wall**

— Your bodhi heart

Your bodhi heart is clear, like a bright lamp

Your bodhi heart puts all eight bitternesses

Outside of the wall

The career like a hot iron wheel, wheeling above your head***

You are not moved, and not embittered

You say: “the career fails to allure me.”

Without the wall it is all commotion, you are sitting straight

Your bosom bright with a bodhi heart

In it, wisdom gives off a rustling sound

Continuously germinating, growing …

* He who is bodyless has no great worries. This originates from Laotse, who says: “my great worries come from my body; when I am bodyless, what worries do I have?”

** Eight bitternesses refer to bitterness of birth, bitterness of aging, bitterness of illness, bitterness of death, bitterness of hate, bitterness of separation from one’s love, bitterness of failing to get what one wants to get, bitterness of inconstancy, etc.

*** The career is the root of bitterness, an act of feeling and emotion.@
